CLEOPATRA'S EYES   It could be misleading

THEY SAY BEAUTY IS IN the eye of the beholder, but that description is misleading. Some argue that beauty lies from within, but even that is still a suspect. Beauty may appear relative to some, or even just a concept others would invent just to suit their own tastes and prejudices.

No, beauty is not in the beholder’s eye or lurking inside your heart, beauty is what beauty does, appealing and transcendent. Standards of beauty are hard to find, but there are standards nevertheless.

For many years, Elizabeth Taylor was considered to be the most beautiful woman in the world. With her purple eyes and her well-chiseled face, she had a look that would go beyond the conventional patterns of beauty, probably in the same vein with Helen of Troy, enabling the whole country to battle a neighboring tribe just so to reclaim that beautiful face.

Taylor, however, did not make America go to war at the expense of her beauty, but she did manage to make a series of men in hot pursuit of her face, the most famous of which is her on-again-off-again relationship with fellow thespian Richard Burton.

But Taylor’s awesome features eventually gave way to a much more utilitarian approach to beauty.

We see the likes of Sophia Loren, incidentally a contemporary of Taylor’s, who had enjoyed a decent following even after her heyday, not because she and Taylor had almost the same physical ornamentation but because her features promise to be more sympathetic with the lofty contours of beauty.

The dreamy face of a Taylor was replaced with the prettified pedestrian look of a Cameron Diaz, Julia Roberts or even our very own Angel Locsin. Gone are those days when such promises of beauty lie only in the belief of something so glorious and heavenly.

Today, however, everybody is entitled to their own concept of it, and that doesn’t necessarily come from the beholder’s eye.

Heavenly no more
And social media, surprisingly, has done a good job in that category. Not only is Facebook fast becoming a social and emotional extension of our lives, it is also rehashing beauty even faster than a quick retouch.

Not a single day passes did users of Facebook change their profile pictures so as to accommodate certain fetishes and moods and as a form of keeping tabs with the rest of their friends, who also has the habit of changing their Facebook profile almost every day.

With the emergence of it, we are already seeing beauty readily enhanced and at the same time being inserted into the consciousness of the masses as a means of acceptance, not in the beholder’s eye, however, but more so in a shared group, as in a Facebook page. Beauty is simply a utility, all for the joy and good of everybody.

My circle of friends, however, are not exempted. Every time I open my account, at least 10 of my friends have changed their profile pics; some change it for the better, others for the worst. But the mere act of changing their profile pics probably has a lot to do with trying to look better every day on the page.

Somehow the thought of leaving beauty solely in the eye of the beholder is fast becoming a risk most of these Facebook enthusiasts won’t cash in. Beauty has a fixed element, and changing your profile picture every other day can only be a process for you to achieve that desired effect, but the same way that by cultivating the same habit, somehow you develop a virtue, which is what this new beauty tries to project.

I have scoured almost all of the pictures of my friends on social media, and I have at least gathered a few photos of them with the conviction that not only are they beautiful in their profile pictures, but that they are also pretty in real life.

Although far from arguing as a biased beholder, I am still convinced that even if I know some of them, others would still consider them beautiful with or without me laying the predicate. I purposely chose to withhold their names and used a fictitious one in order not to complicate it further with some unsolicited inquiry, but for those who know the persons in this beautiful lineup and their subsequent whereabouts, I hope discretion would always be their guide.

Whether beauty is only skin deep or just another passing fad that resurfaces into other forms of expression, these beauties, one way or another, has provided me with some sort of art and joy since I first gazed on them.

“A thing of beauty is a joy forever.” I hope you too can have that same joy, and enjoying it while it lasts.

SANDRA

Seeing this picture for the first time is a joy indeed, though at first, I was suspicious about a technology makeover and the enhancement that goes with it. But Sandra was not only beautiful, she's simply gorgeous (at least from the perspective of her photos).

She somehow got it, and her profile picture certainly tops the list. She seems to have a really nice profile, all the angles on her face, as far as this picture goes, are placed perfectly in the right spot, fine-tuned.

And you could almost feel the unblemished edge of her face in this photo, a face that could potentially launch a thousand likes online.

She has this seemingly vulnerable, alluring eyes, and her half-open mouth sends a host of hormonal imbalances to the entire male species

The good thing about this photo is that the owner, Sandra herself, knows what is at stake. When I asked her not to change her profile pic, she readily replied “Thanks”. Beauty is all a matter of knowing.

NATASHA

If inner peace is a prerequisite of beauty, then there must be something heavenly in a beautiful person, and what better way of highlighting the better angels of that loftiness than by using it as a profile pic.

Natasha was an old friend, but over the years, hers is a face that always leaves an unsettling imprint to her friends and acquaintances.

Here we see her posing in front of a camera, probably after taking a bath, and the impression that no matter how many poses you exude in front of the lens, beauty will always out.

No exaggeration this time, but what you see is what you will get in person. The same intense smile, the same vulnerability, the same silken pose and the same smoothness that can only be described as stimulating.

Natasha worships the Lord Jesus, and there must be something beautiful in Him

NADINE

Even with her eyes closed, the passion that comes out of Nadine is unbridled with a lot of good stuff.

This picture was probably taken from a studio, but instead of relying solely on what the Adobe Photoshop can do to a picture, the person who developed this photo need not do the necessary repair on certain angles of her face, he only has to turn on the lights to enhance an already beautiful aspect.

This only shows you how awesome her features could become with proper lighting and a seemingly plain make-up

Nadine is already well in her years, but that doesn’t stop me from featuring her as someone so beautiful, both in and out of a photo

Age is not a detriment to beauty, it enhances it in ways only the likes of Nadine could do so well. A certified cougar with a classy prowl.

CASSANDRA

Her face remains the same, and because of it, beauty has stayed with us for quite some time.

Cassandra was still in her teens when I first saw her, and from then on there’s no stopping of my admiration and quiet approval of her beauty.

“Fresh” is the right word to describe her facial gift to mankind, even if she has her own kids now at her disposal. Sometimes God lends His own beautiful purpose to a single person by giving her all the beautiful nature of heaven on her face, so that those who have been oppressed by beauty can have their own sense of purpose simply by looking at her.

There’s almost an element of innocence in her own brand of projection as exemplified in that casual pose on her profile pic, but she is probably taking it one beautiful step at a time, especially now that she’s in her prime.

Beauty is not premeditated; it is a state of being recollected in innocence.

MARGARET

The question is: If you dress her in drag, would she still look beautiful? The answer is already given.

But beautiful people are prone to injustices, and most of the time they are the ones committing the atrocities themselves, so to speak.

For one, they make people envious of their beautiful wares, which can lead to a life of "crime", either stalking on them or fantasize about them at night. Second, beautiful persons tend to shatter other people’s value on themselves; they easily distract someone’s own sense of self-worth. That is probably what I see on Margaret, a pal whose beauty makes us all insecure and shell-shocked.

But she’s always been very beautiful long before Facebook had emphasized the idea of having a profile pic. In fact, she doesn’t need to change her picture hurriedly on Facebook like the rest of us; even a casual take from her could generate a lot of likes unlimited.

Only time will tell before she could become the face of a city, a city constantly stalking and fantasizing about a girl of her own beauty.

MARIE

Oh, my goodness, the total package. I could only imagine what those guys must have felt when they saw her on that bikini contest not too long ago, and with a stimulating face like that.

Marie not only has that sensual look, but she also has her necessary figure to back up her already stunning presence. The distributive property of life has been distributed properly on her.

You could almost feel the damaging effects of your defenses every time you come close to her, the feeling that she’s really too beautiful to be attached to you.

No one can deny the blossoming of her business ventures all because of her ready charm and her already warm personality. I bet even in her 30s, she still has that same vitality which can only be seen on her equally vital aspect.

Somehow you inherit a certain amount of beauty, not by enhancing it with a makeup, but by having it right from the get-go.

MIA

One look at her look, one sees a lady having a perfect smile, and an equally pretty stuff going on.

Yes, Mia is a petite, country lass with some cosmopolitan amenities alongside. She has done a good job, I think, of preserving that once-in-a-lifetime face, a face that only comes once in a pink moon.

Here she seemed to be on her way to a prom, the jewelry attached to her head compliments perfectly to her self-assured eyes, pink cheeks and her dreamy smile.

Seldom can you find a face as complete as that of Mia, and even if you find it, you will still feel weak in its presence.

I should know, on the many occasions when I had a chance to talk to her in college, I could only say some good and positive things in front of her, to dwell on something negative would only stain the unsullied features of her face.

One of the good things about having a beautiful friend is the thought that you too perhaps could be worthy of such a label. And what an awesome feeling that would be.

ANDREA

It was only recently that she confirmed my friend request, but that is understandable. A face and a pose like that should not be acquainted with a bearded fellow who writes inconsequential sonnets online.

Let’s be clear on this one, anyone who wants to be acquainted with a beautiful person should first go to a nearby NBI office and secure a clearance, otherwise, you’ll be committing a federal offense and you’ll be so sorry you haven’t heeded the warning.

But Andrea sure is a good find. Acquaintances often call her as their own version of KC Concepcion. But we’ll have none of that. KC looked haggard compared to her.

Mestizas are well represented in our country, and this is such a happy addition, but Andrea seemed like a rare breed, her lineage all point to a darker, more pronounced version of her rosy milky way. This only aggravated my perception when I saw some of her revealing pics that my jaw immediately dropped. Beauty, most often than not, is a birthright.

THESE AND COUNTLESS OTHERS are just some of the beautiful faces that come across my page over the past few years. I know reactions will come in handy if and when this article hits the page, but these 8 beauties had caught the attention of some and brushed upon the sensibilities of others, as has been observed, well beyond the pallets of conventional beauty.

Their individual features can only be assessed within the confines of their respective appeals, regardless of their impact on people, and so the only standard for a truly beautiful person is its inherent ability to please the whole crowd, and not solely on the merits of a spectator's reaction to it.

Perhaps there may be some exceptions to the rule, that what you may find beautiful may never pass as one to the other person. There may be relatives governing what is beautiful or not, provocative or otherwise, but at some point, you will probably encounter a face that practically encroaches on some already defined notions of beauty.

And by the time it violates the whole systematic view of a beautiful person, then you will know that beauty itself is autonomous and has its own reason for being, perhaps the same reason we always claim when we see a beautiful face in front of us.

It’s almost impossible to think of beauty other than seeing someone’s face. This is where the debate takes its genesis every time the subject of beauty comes out of the desert and into that beautiful wilderness. But some people are born beautiful, born with an intense facility to give pleasure to the human eye. It’s as if either you were born with it or you simply suffer the sorry consequences.

And I refuse to admit even the sagacity of beauty coming from within, that what is inside that lady ultimately makes her our ultimate fantasy because that is more or less applicable in our way of life than in the way life is presented before us. Not only we are blessed with what their beauties can offer, they also bring about something good in us.

Beauty may be superficial in its initial thrust, but this same superficiality also is giving beauty its lasting and more potent contribution, a smile on the face.

NO ACCIDENT Beauty is not premeditated
